It is a breed originating in the United Kingdom with verygood meat skills.
It arises from the crossing of native races, known asOld Norfolk Horn, with ramsSouthdown. At firstThey were known as “black faces.”The breed was recognized in 1810.
The first record of Suffolk sheep dates back to 1797, when the English agricultural writer Arthur Young highlighted this breed for the texture, flavor and color of its meat in the document «Overview of Agriculture in the County of Sufflolk.»
A few years later in 1886 theSuffolk Sheep Association, and in 1887 the first farm registry book for this breed was published, which included 46 flocks of between 50 and 1,100 sheep.The breed begins to spreadto Ireland, Scotland and Wales, then to the rest of the world.
Phenotypic characteristics of the breed
Suffolk sheep areeasyto identify due to itsmedium to large size,headandblack legs, andlack of wool on his body. Its wool is dense and has no black fibers, while its legs are straight, muscular and strong, with resistant hooves. The trunk of these sheep is well balanced and broad, with adeep chestand arched ribs. Theirears are thin and long, with a slight inclination forward.

The females are of good fertility, a99% fertility, maternal ability and milk production, that is one of the consequences of fast growing lambs. But it has the problem of reproductive seasonality, with an index ofdouble birthsbetween 25% to 35%.
The performance inchannel(housing) is located between the45 – 48%. The lambs are born black and become whiter around 4 – 5 months of age. TheAdult malesThey can weigh between110 – 160 Kgand thefemalesThey reach weights between75 – 80 kilos.
The breed stands out for itsmeat qualityand goodgrowth speed, which makes it precocious with easy births when crossed with other breeds. The meat lambs are at their peak from3 – 4 monthsage and weight35 – 40 kilos.
Suffolk sheep reproductive characteristics
It’s a racehighly valuedfor several reasons. Firstly, it is known for its rapid growth, which allows lambs to be marketed earlier and reach higher weights according to consumer preferences,thus reducing production costs.
This breed has aeasy delivery due to its large pelvic area, they owngood maternal qualitiesand they arevery prolific, with a prolificacy index of1,62, surpassing the1,7in adult females.
As for yourmaternal ability, produces one550 milliliters of milk per daybut he has a very nervous and unpredictable behavior. She can abandon her calf just to go look for food as soon as she gives birth.

Due to these characteristics, male Suffolk sheep have been used as a breedimprover in crosses with other breeds of sheep. The objective of these crosses is to improve the quality of the breed and increase sheep meat production. In Spain, Suffolk breed stallions have been used on females of native breeds such as the Aragonese Rasa, since it is a quick, simple and economical method to improve meat production.
